STOPPED AT SIX
UCSD's six-match win streak that started on Sept. 15 vs. Cal State L.A. and was snapped last Saturday at San Francisco State was its longest of the season. In 2011, the Tritons won nine straight twice.
REGARDING THE COYOTES
Cal State San Bernardino has made quite a turnaround. After losing its first CCAA match vs. Cal State L.A., CSUSB has won its last seven and enters Wednesday's tilt atop the league standings with a 7-1 mark (10-6 overall). Five of the team's six losses have come against top-25 ranked squads. The Coyotes lead the league in blocks per set (2.67). Mercedes Winchester leads the team in kills (142) and is hitting .328. Arielle McCullough has a team-best 257 digs and Brenna McIntosh leads with 64 blocks. Setter Camille Smith, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, averages 9.95 assists/set and has a team-high 18 service aces.
REGARDING THE OTTERS
Cal State Monterey Bay enters Friday's match with a 10-7 overall record and in eighth place in the CCAA at 4-5. The Otters are coming off a five-match home stand in which they posted a 4-1 record with wins over Humboldt State, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Stanislaus. Julia Ashen averages 4.08 kills/set, the 15th-best total in the nation. She's put away double-figure kills in 16 or 17 matches, including her last 14. Rachel Cookus leads CSUMB with 237 digs and Janai Johnson has a team-high 45 blocks. Setter Kelsey Johnston averages 9.42 assists/set.
REGARDING THE PIONEERS
Cal State East Bay, which plays at Cal State San Bernardino Friday night, brings a 6-10 overall record and a 1-8 CCAA mark into the week. Losers of eight of their last 10, the Pioneers sit in 11th place in the league. Suzy Ni Xu leads CSUEB with 172 kills and 203.0 points. Veronica Sanchez leads in digs with 230, while Samantha Bruno has a team-high 45 blocks. Samantha Siebert averages 7.10 assists/set.
UCSD family and friends are coming together this season to remember former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis, who was tragically killed in Coronado in January of 2012. A recognition was held prior to the Cal State L.A. match on Sept. 15, at which the Reis family was presented with a "No. 1" jersey and a moment of silence was observed. The Tritons will wear a special insignia (pictured at right) on their uniform jerseys all season. In addition, you may notice the "Reis Ripple" graphics on the pole pads at RIMAC Arena. These signify the positive impact that Karen had on everyone she met and how that impact trickled down from one person to another.
