WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Josh Cohen, UC San Diego's junior goalkeeper, has been named the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 15-21.
Cohen, out of Sunnyvale and Bellarmine College Prep, kept a pair of shutouts in net this weekend as the Tritons held the top two teams in the CCAA North Division goalless over 200 minutes of soccer while grabbing four points at home.
Cohen thus becomes the second Triton men's player to earn the CCAA's weekly distinction in 2012, following senior teammate Evan Walker's honor on Oct. 1. UCSD is the only team in the league with multiple awards this season.
In a 1-0 victory over Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night to snap the Warriors' four-game win streak, Cohen made four saves. The haul included a tough, diving effort in the 11th minute.
He followed that up with a pair of stops during a scoreless draw against North-leading Chico State on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Triton Soccer Field. The Wildcats had begun the day on a 10-match unbeaten streak, and were held without a goal for only the second time this season by Cohen and the UCSD defense.
For the weekend, Cohen faced 23 shots. He now has six shutouts on the year.
UCSD travels north this weekend to take on Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay, still with a shot at qualifying for its first CCAA Championship since 2005. They trail South leaders Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills by five and three points, respectively and need to overtake one of them on this last weekend of the regular season.
