Rank and File
In this week's AVCA national poll, UCSD remained at No. 24 for the second consecutive week. The Tritons are the lone CCAA squad to be ranked among the nation's top 25. In addition, the NCAA came out with its first regional rankings of the season this week with UCSD debuting at No. 5. BYU-Hawaii is first, followed by Western Washington, Grand Canyon and Cal State San Bernardino. Behind the Tritons are San Francisco State in sixth, Central Washington in seventh, Western Oregon in eighth, Sonoma State in ninth and Chico State rounding out the top 10.
Six Straight Streak and Sweeps
UCSD has now won a league-high six straight matches, equaling its longest streak of the season. The run began on October 12 at Cal State Monterey Bay. Four of the six victories have come as three-set sweeps. UCSD also won six matches in a row between September 15 and October 5. The Tritons won nine straight contests twice last season, including the first nine of the year.
Freshman Kameron Cooper established several career-highs last week, including three digs, seven blocks and 11.0 points in Saturday's win over Cal Poly Pomona and two service aces the night before in a sweep of Humboldt State.
Regarding the Warriors
Cal State Stanislaus brings a 7-16 overall record into Friday night's match. The Warriors are tied for 10th place in the CCAA (along with Cal State East Bay) at 4-11. Losers of six of their last seven, the Warriors return home after playing four straight on the road. Andrea Fett leads the team with her 300 kills, 123 more than her closest teammate. She is also tops in points and third in aces and digs. Kendal Munoz averages 8.75 assists per set and has 25 aces, both team-highs. Ashley Pittman averages 3.77 digs per set and Melissa Bishop has 80 total blocks. CSUS is attacking at just .181 compared to .230 for its opponents. The Warriors are out-blocking their foes, 1.94 to 1.82 per set.
Regarding the Wildcats
Chico State entered the week at 14-8 overall and 8-7 in the CCAA, good for a tie for fifth with Cal State L.A. The Wildcats host league-leading Cal State San Bernardino Friday night. Chico lost a pair last week, falling to San Francisco State (3-1) and Sonoma State (3-2), both on the road. After starting the season with a 10-1 record, the Wildcats lost five of nine tilts in October. Following four straight away from home, Chico State will host their next five matches at Acker Gym. Alex Shurtz leads the CCAA in kills (366), kills per set (4.31) and points per set (4.75). She's also second among league players with 24 solo blocks. Lindsay Quigley's .338 hitting percentage leads the conference as well, while Sable Villaescusa is second in assists (877) and assists per set (10.44).
UCSD family and friends are coming together this season to remember former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis, who was tragically killed in Coronado in January of 2012. A recognition was held prior to the Cal State L.A. match on Sept. 15, at which the Reis family was presented with a "No. 1" jersey and a moment of silence was observed. The Tritons will wear a special insignia on their uniform jerseys all season. In addition, you may notice the "Reis Ripple" graphics on the pole pads at RIMAC Arena. These signify the positive impact that Karen had on everyone she met and how that impact trickled down from one person to another.
