KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Another bevy of UC San Diego women's soccer players have earned postseason honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) this week. The Tritons moved up from No. 5 to No. 2 in Tuesday's announcement of the final 2012 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Women's national poll, ranking only behind the University of West Florida, which defeated UCSD, 1-0, in last Saturday's NCAA Division II title game in Georgia.
Six Tritons made the three NSCAA NCAA Division II Women All-West Region teams. Cassie Callahan, Hayley Johnson and Ellen Wilson were each selected to the 13-player first team, with Kelcie Brodsky and Gabi Hernandez making the second team, and senior midfielder Britnee Chesney garnering third-team recognition. Brodsky was the only freshman on either the first or second teams.
The six honorees were tied for the high by a single program with Western Washington.
Of those six, Callahan and Wilson were chosen to 2012 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Women's All-America teams. Callahan, out of nearby Coronado High School, made the 13-player first team as the Tritons' leader in goals (10), assists (8) and points (28) during her sophomore campaign. Wilson, a senior center back and tri-captain out of Santa Ana, was designated on the 14-player third team after playing every minute of all 24 matches for UCSD this season and adding three goals offensively to her defensive performance.
It was the first NSCAA All-America honors for both players, though Wilson (first team) and Callahan (third) were each previously selected as Daktronics All-Americans last month. Both were also on the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team.
The only other two NSCAA All-Americans from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) were junior forwards Karenee Demery of Cal State Stanislaus and Cara Curtin of Sonoma State, chosen to the first and third teams, respectively.
UCSD completed the 2012 season with a 17-3-4 overall record and as the CCAA and West Region champion. The Tritons were national runners-up for the second time in the past three years.
