SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Gabi Hernandez, a senior forward and tri-captain on the UC San Diego women's soccer team, was named recently as a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for November.
Hernandez was the fourth UCSD student-athlete and third Triton women's soccer player to earn the distinction for the 2012 fall season. She joined fellow soccer standouts Cassie Callahan (September) and Izzy Pozurama (October), as well as freshman volleyball player Danielle Dahle as UCSD honorees.
Hernandez, out of Altadena, scored in each of her first four games in the month of November, all postseason tilts as the Tritons won the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship for the first time since 2008, before earning their second West Region crown over the last three years. UCSD ultimately made it all the way to the NCAA Division II final, where it dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to West Florida and wound up with a No. 2 national ranking.
In the CCAA Championship semifinal, Hernandez scored in the 87th minute to give UCSD a 2-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus. She then also tallied just 24 seconds into the second half to open the scoring against Sonoma State in the final, before the Tritons outlasted the Seawolves via penalty-kick tiebreaker, with Hernandez also converting her opportunity there to earn CCAA Championship MVP honors.
The second-team All-West Region selection completed her last college campaign with nine goals, tied for second-most on the team, and one assist. For her exemplary four-year Triton career, Hernandez started 66 of 89 matches played, and produced 20 goals and four assists for 44 total points.
Hernandez was among six winners at the amateur level. A total of 15 athletes were chosen for November, with three professional stars and six high school athletes.
