SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego swimmer Paul Li and water polo player Sarah Lizotte were each named Tuesday as San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for February.
Li earned Male Swimmer of the Meet honors as the top male point-getter with a maximum 96 at the 2014 Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference (PCSC) Championships in La Mirada, Feb. 12-15. The sophomore helped guide ninth-ranked UCSD to a sixth consecutive PCSC title.
Li first led off the Tritons' first-place 800 free relay in a school- and meet-record time of 6:37.14. He then completed his winning race in the 500 freestyle final in 4:25.48, over a full second faster than Kneif Lohse’s previous school standard of 4:26.81 from the 2009 NCAA Championships. It marked a first career individual conference title for the Fullerton native (Troy HS), and booked his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships, getting just under the 4:25.66 automatic qualifier. Li also touched the wall first in both the 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle on the third day of the meet. He went 3:54.82 in the 400 IM before swimming 1:39.44 in the 200.
Lizotte totaled 27 goals in February with nine multi-goal efforts, as the Triton women’s water polo team picked up seven wins, including five over top-20 squads. During the Triton Invitational on Feb. 8-9, the product of Riverside (Riverside Poly HS) broke UCSD's career scoring and assists records in front of the home crowd at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The senior has tallied 266 goals to pass UCSD Hall of Famer, Olympic silver medalist and former U.S. national team captain Julie Swail’s total of 245. Lizotte also eclipsed Jamie Dailey’s mark of 125 assists, now at 144. She had the Tritons ranked as high as No. 6 early in the month, the program's highest ranking under fifth-year head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. The Tritons, ranked No. 11 currently, are looking to return to the NCAA Championship for the second straight year.
Li and Lizotte join men's basketball senior point guard James McCann (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) from January to give UCSD three Stars of the Month already for the 2014 calendar year. Li is a first-time honoree, while this is Lizotte's third career SDHOC award, having previously been recognized in both April and May of 2013.
