NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but ultimately fell, 5-2, to CSUN in game two of the series on Friday afternoon at Matador Field.
Â
The Tritons (23-32, 12-17 Big West) were limited to three hits in the contest—
Michael Fuhrman went 1-for-2, including a pinch-hit solo homerun and
Emiliano Gonzalez finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Noah Conlon pitched 6.1 innings in his final start as a Triton, allowing three runs—two earned—on five hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams stayed quiet through the first two innings before the Matadors (32-21, 17-12 Big West) took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third.Â
Â
The Tritons answered quickly, getting a run back on an RBI-ground by Gonzalez with runners on second and third with one out to make it 3-1.
Â
Conlon and the Tritons held the CSUN lineup in check into the sixth inning before the Matadors advanced two runners into scoring position. But a ground-out to
Crew Robinson at second ended the threat and kept it a two-run ballgame.
Â
In the top of the seventh, Fuhrman came to the plate as a pinch hitter with two outs and knocked a towering solo homerun to left field—his sixth of the year—to make it 3-2.
Â
The Matadors responded in the bottom of the inning, plating two more runs on an RBI single to extend the lead back to three, 5-2.
Â
The Tritons saw their best opportunity in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. However, an infield fly and a strikeout ended the rally and secured the victory for CSUN.
