Tritons Finish Competition at SMC Tournament

MORAGA, Calif. – Wrapping competition at the Saint Mary's tournament in Moraga, Calif., the Tritons went 1-1 on the final day as they shutout Utah State in game one, 7-0, and fell to their host, 9-6, in game two.

The Tritons move to 6-4 and went 3-2 at the Saint Mary's tournament.

In game one, Gabby Williams tossed a complete game for the Tritons. The lefty junior shutout the Aggies, only allowing three hits and striking out nine batters with one walk. Offensively, five Tritons scored with Marissa Hassis and Zoe Richards both scored two runs. Clarissa Reynoso was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and three batted in.

Getting the start in game two, Shelby Thompson walked one batter and punched out two with four flyouts and five ground outs. She gave up six hits and one earned run. Coming on as relief, Kaia Simpson gave up four hits and one earned run with no walks and three strikeouts. Errors plagued the Tritons causing seven of the nine Gaels' runs to be unearned.

Racking up their seven runs in the second and fifth inning, the Tritons got on the board first and kept the Aggies scoreless.

Deena Pederson threatened in the first when she hit a leadoff single past second base and then stole second. Bobbi Aguirre reached on a Gaels' error and was able to advance to second with Pederson stealing third. Both Triton runners were stranded.

Marissa Hassis led off the second when she was walked by SMC. On an error, Zoe Richards reached and advanced Hassis into scoring position. Alexa DeMarse then hit a sac bunt to advance each runner another base. With runners on third and second, Clarissa Reynoso smashed a double to right field to plate both and put the Tritons on the board at 2-0. Reynoso moved to third on a ground out which allowed her to score on Aguirre's single. Advancing to second on Keila Bosinger's single, Aguirre was then able to score when Gabby Williams laced a single through left center. The Tritons ended the inning at 4-0.

Remaining scoreless in the third and fourth, UC San Diego tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hassis was walked again by the SMC pitching staff. Facing two outs, Richards ripped a triple to left center to plate Hassis and get into scoring position. Pinch hitter Reilly Erickson followed suit when she powered her own triple to right center to bring Richards home. 60 feet from scoring, Erickson was brought in on a single from Reynoso for the final Triton run, 7-0.

Behind nine strikeouts from Gabby Williams, the lefty allowed only three hits with five flyouts and six ground outs.

SAINT MARY'S 9, UC SAN DIEGO 6
The Tritons got on the board quickly with two runs in the first inning. Leading off the lineup, Deena Pederson singled through left center and was advanced to second on a sac bunt from Bobbi Aguirre. A single laced up the middle from Keila Bosinger plated Pederson to put the Tritons up 1-0. Bosinger promptly stole second to get into scoring position. Earning her first NCAA hit, Teagan Dobson singled to right center to advance Bosinger another base. Then, Marissa Hassis shot a single through right center to plate Bosinger, making the score 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, SMC responded with a single run. The Tritons responded in kind with three runs in the top of the fourth. Starting the inning, Aguirre shot a double down the left field line to set up the first run. Kelley Renner came in as a pinch runner for Aguirre. Gabby Williams' double to left center was more than enough time for Renner to score. After a pitching change, the new SMC pitcher walked Dobson. On an error from the Gaels, Hassis reached and advanced Williams and Dobson a single base. Pinch hitter, Hannah Allen, stepped up to the plate to bat in both Williams and Dobson with a single laced up the middle. Hassis and Allen were left stranded on the corners.

Responding in the bottom half, a Triton error allowed three runs to come in, 5-4. UC San Diego's final run came in the top of the fifth. Leading off with another hit, Pederson doubled to left center to get into scoring position. Williams threaded a single up the middle to bring Pederson home.

The Gaels scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and then four more in the bottom of the sixth due to more errors. The Tritons loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but were left stranded.
