Tritons Swept at Home

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Dropping their fourth consecutive series, UC San Diego was swept by Cal State Fullerton after the Tritons fell in the final two games of the series on Saturday afternoon.

Cal State Fullerton improves to 24-16 overall and 11-4 in Big West play. The Tritons drop to 15-25 overall and 5-10 in Big West play.

Getting the start in the circle, Jada Cecil allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. The right-hander took the loss, moving to 7-9 on the season. Coming in as relief, Gabby Williams tossed two innings and allowed one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Kaia Simpson finished in the circle and gave up no runs in her two innings. The senior gave up two hits, two walks, and recorded two strikeouts.

At the plate the Tritons struggled to get their bats going at the right times to be shutout for the second time by the Titans. Leading UC San Diego, Marissa Hassis and Hailey Mulligan were both 2-for-3. Zoe Richards and Bobbi Aguirre were the only other Tritons to get a hit.

In game two, Shelby Thompson got the start in the circle. The lefty gave up one run on five hits with one walk over 4.2 innings of work. Thompson was credited with the loss and moves to 2-4 this season. Gabby Williams came on for 1.1 innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with a walk. An error caused an unearned run to be scored during her time. Kaia Simpson finished again in the circle, this time going for one inning with a strikeout and a hit.

CSF held the Tritons to a .083 batting average with only two hits recorded and seven Tritons striking out. Mariah Melendez and Gabby Williams both went 1-for-3.

CAL STATE FULLERTON 6, UC SAN DIEGO 0
The Titans struck early with four runs in the second inning when a one-out three-run homer got Fullerton going. They extended their lead in the third and fifth with a single run in each inning for the final score of 6-0.

The Tritons left 11 runners on base and were able to load the bases three different times but couldn't cash in.

In the bottom of the third, Hailey Mulligan laced a single up the middle to become the lead runner. Morgan Eng was walked by Fullerton and was able to steal second as Mulligan stole third. Marissa Hassis was then walked by CSF. With the bases loaded and one out, Keila Bosinger reached on a fielder's choice as Mulligan was tagged out at home. The runners were left stranded as the final out came.

Getting on base as the lead runner for the Tritons in the fifth inning, Morgan Eng was hit by a pitch between her shoulder blades. Hassis laced another single up the middle to advance Eng and reach. Bosinger advanced the runners on a ground out. Both runners were left stranded 60 feet from home.

With time running out, the Tritons loaded the bases again in the sixth as a final attempt to prevent the shutout. With two outs on the board, pinch hitter, Zoe Richards laced a single past second base to start the two-out rally. Alexa DeMarse watched four balls come in to take the walk and advance Richards. Mulligan powered another single up the middle to load the bases. Fullerton shut the door with a strikeout for the final out.

CAL STATE FULLERTON 3, UC SAN DIEGO 0
Fullerton struck first with a single run in the third, 1-0. The board remained empty for both teams until the sixth when the Titans add two more insurance runs to their score, 3-0.

In the bottom of the third, Gabby Williams led the charge with a leadoff single laced up the middle. On a fielder's choice, Williams made it to second safely while Hailey Mulligan was able to reach first. Another fielder's choice forced Williams out at third but advanced Mulligan on second and add Marissa Hassis to first. Fullerton walked Keila Bosinger on a 4-0 count to load the bases. All three Triton runners were left stranded as CSF ended the inning with a strikeout. It was the only inning the Tritons threatened.
