Tritons Take Series Opener Over Highlanders

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego took the series opener with a 7-5 victory on Friday night as they held off a late rally from UC Riverside.

Getting the start in the circle for the Tritons, Jada Cecil tossed a total of five innings with five strikeouts, no runs, no walks, and only one hit. The sophomore was perfect through four innings and retired all 12 batters in order before a double in the fifth broke up the perfect game. In that same inning, Cecil struck out the following three batters stranding the runner. Kaia Simpson came on as relief in the sixth inning allowing two runs on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Cecil returned to the game for the seventh inning giving up two walks and three runs.

At the plate, Bobbi Aguirre plated four runs and was 2-for-3 with a run scored herself. Sophia Real plated two and was 2-for-3 as well. Morgan Eng and Marissa Hassis both scored two with Mikaila Pancino and Keila Bosinger both scoring one each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Morgan Eng beat out the throw after she bunted to become the lead runner for the Tritons. While Marissa Hassis was at the plate, Eng stole second to get into scoring position. Hassis then singled to the right field to advance Eng to third and reach first. She proceeded to steal second to put both runners in scoring position. Bobbi Aguirre grounded out but batted Eng in to get on the board, 1-0.

The Tritons extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of third inning. Eng and Hassis started the inning with a single each for a runner on first and second. On a sacrifice bunt, Keila Bosinger advanced both runners to third and second. All three runs came in a row as Aguirre singled to left to plate Eng and advance Hassis. Clarissa Reynoso then singled to left field to advance Aguirre to second and plate Hassis. Sophia Real then laced a single down the left field line to plate Aguirre.

Tacking three more runs on in the fifth inning, the top of the order went to work again for the gold and blue. Hassis laced a single through the middle of the Highlander defense to become the lead runner. Bosinger advanced Hassis to third with a single down the right field line to get on at first. She proceeded to steal second to get into scoring position for Aguirre. Both runners scored as Aguirre singled out to center field giving both runners time to make it safely. Aguirre was able to make it to second on the throw home and was pinch ran for by Mikaila Pancino. Real cracked a double to the left field fence to plate Aguirre to make the score 7-0.

The Highlanders broke up the shutout in the sixth with two runs. In the seventh they added three more on to pull within two. Jada Cecil held off their rally to fan her seventh batter of the game for the final out.
