LA JOLLA, Calif. - This past Saturday, Feb. 1, the UC San Diego track and field programs held the Fifth Annual Léon T. Roach III Vault-a-Thon at Triton Track & Field Stadium.
Léon T. Roach III was a former UCSD student-athlete who passed away in 2009. Together, the men's and women's track and field programs raised over $4,500 from the Vault-a-Thon. These funds will be directed toward financing ongoing Triton Track & Field Stadium facility improvements.
On the men's side of the Vault-a-Thon, Dillon Atchley finished first clearing a mark of 15'9". There was a three-way tie for second by all current UCSD track and field student-athletes. Seniors Benjamin Berthet and Clint Rosser tied with fellow teammate, sophomore Daniel Golubovic for second, all clearing a mark of 14'9".
For the women, Kaitlynn Merritt cleared a mark of 12'3" to finish first. UCSD's Chrissi Carr finished second with a mark of 11'3, while Kate Thomas tied for third with UCSD's Megan Benham and Sydney Blakeley, clearing a mark of 10'9".
"Once again, it was a great turnout for a great event," said UCSD men's head coach Tony Salerno. "It is inspiring to see the pole vault community's continued level of support for the Roach family, as well as the support the Roach family has continued to provide for the UCSD Athletics Department and track and field program."
The UCSD track and field programs find themselves back at Triton Track & Field Stadium this Saturday, Feb. 8, for the Blue-Gold-Alumni meet. The first events are slated to start at 11:30 a.m.
