LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team went up against the top-ranked team in the country and dropped a 13-3 decision to the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford scored the first seven goals of the game, before UCSD's Sydney Gstettenbauer got the Tritons on the board. UCSD's strongest quarter came in the last, where Stanford outscored the Tritons by a 3-2 score. Nicole Hermann and Rebecca Gearty scored UCSD's fourth quarter goals. UCSD is back in action on Friday, March 9 when it takes on Marist in Santa Barbara at 5:00 p.m.
Stanford got off to q quick start as Katie Hansen scored three, first-quarter goals and the Cardinal led 4-0 after one quarter.
Lolo Silver scored twice in the second frame, helping Stanford to the 10-1 lead at intermission. UCSD's Gstettenbauer scored the Tritons' first goal.
Stanford was held to two scores in the third, on scores by Jessica Stefens and Silver's third score of the game.
The Tritons' Hermann netted a goal at the 7:38 mark in the fourth, before Stanford's Crane matched the goal. Heather West would give the Cardinal a 12-2 edge at the 4:48 mark. UCSD's Gearty then netted her score with 3:15 remaining. Stanford's Holshouser scored the final goal and ended the game at 13-3 Stanford.
