LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 15th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team earned a split on Monday, defeating Western Oregon by a 3-2 score on Monday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. Redshirt Freshman Kyle Saul hit a game-tying, two-run homerun in the seventh inning, his first collegiate hit. Garrett Imeson hit the game-winning single for the Tritons in the eighth inning. Keith Noe earned the win, while Nick Rodieck saved his second game of the year. UCSD is back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts Cal State San Marcos at 2:00 p.m. The Tritons will go on to host Grand Canyon for four games over the weekend.
Imeson joined teammate Chris Franco with a multi-hit game. Tim Shibuya pitched 4.1 innings of relief, shutting out the Wolves while striking out six. Noe, who was the extra-innings losing pitcher on Saturday, earned the win, evening his record to 1-1.
After the first out of the first inning, three Wolves reached, followed by a double by Ryan Lewis for a 2-0 WOU lead. With the bases loaded, Evan Domanic came away with a nice catch to end the frame and keep the Wolves with two runs.
In the top of the third WOU put two runners on with two outs and Shibuya entered and extinguished the rally with a three-pitch strikeout.
In the bottom of the seventh, Franco single with one out and Saul homered to leftfield, tying the game at 2-2.
In the UCSD eighth, Justin Bono led off with a single up the middle and Vance Albitz beat out a bunt to put two on with no outs. A passed ball put runners on second and third and Imeson hit a bloop single to center, giving the Tritons a 3-2 lead.
Rodieck entered to pitch a perfect ninth inning to save the win.
