No. 9 UCSD Eliminated From CCAA Tournament with Loss to CSUS

CHICO, Calif.  ? The 9th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team suffered its fourth consecutive loss on Friday, losing in extra innings to Cal State Stanislaus 6-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.  The Tritons led 4-0 and saw the Warriors rally to take a 5-4 lead.  Chris Hom came through with a two-out RBI in a the ninth-inning, tying the game at 5-5.  CSUS came through in the bottom half of the 10th-inning with a leadoff single and RBI double to advance to play another game.  With the loss UCSD drops to 41-16.

 

With one out in the UCSD second, Tim Mort doubled in the first Triton run and Michael Benton followed with an RBI single, giving the Tritons a 2-0 lead.  The hit extended Benton's hitting streak to 10 games.

 

In the UCSD fourth, Evan Kehoe led off with a double to right field.  Garrett Imeson homered to left field, giving the Tritons a 4-0 edge.

 

CSUS's Jake Okatani hit a solo homerun leading off the Warriors fourth inning to cut the Triton lead down to 4-1. 

 

With one out in the Warriors fifth, Jeff Hughes doubled and Kyle Loretelli singled to put runners on the corners.  Jeff Bellotti followed with a sac fly to right for an RBI and CSUS was within 4-2. 

 

CSUS put runners on the corners with one out in the sixth inning, knocking out UCSD starter Guido Knudson.  With Tim Shibuya pitching, the CCAA Freshman of the Year struck out the next two Warriors to keep the Tritons ahead 4-2.

 

The Warriors loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh.  The CSUS clean-up hitter hit into a fielders choice for an RBI and the Warriors were within 4-3 with runners on the corners.  David Contreras followed with a soft single to left center, tying the game at 4-4.  Jacob Thelen followed with a double to left center, giving the Warriors its first lead of the day at 5-4. 

 

In the UCSD ninth, Benton singled with one out and pinch runner Ryland MacFadyen advanced to second on a groundout.  With two outs, UCSD's Chris Hom delivered a single to center and MacFadyen beat the throw home as UCSD tied the game 5-5. 

 

After Shibuya shutdown the Warriors in the last half of the ninth, Cantele led off the UCSD 10th with a walk and advanced to second on Kehoe's sac bunt.  The next two Tritons could not get the potential go-ahead run home and the score remained 5-5.

 

Adam Fonville doubled in the game winning RBI in the 10th with no outs giving the Warriors a 6-5 win.

 

UCSD will now wait to see who they will face next week in the NCAA West Regional next week.
