LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team earned two more wins on Friday at the Triton Invitational in RIMAC Arena. UCSD defeated Lynn 25-16, 25-18, 17-25, 25-17 and Pacific Region opponent and No. 24 BYU-Hawaii 16-25, 25-18, 25-23, 27-25. With the wins, the Tritons improve to 5-1 on the year. In other Tournament action, No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino won twice, Cal State L.A. won twice, while Cal State Dominguez Hills and Seattle Pacific each won one game. Rebecca Bailey led the Tritons in kills with 14 against Lynn and 19 against BYUH. The Tritons used a balanced attack against BYUH as Kimberly Carpenter added 15 kills while Hillary Williamson added 11 kills on .450 hitting.
In the game against Lynn to begin the day, The Tritons cruised to wins in the first two sets. Lynn took a lead and controlled the third set. Lynn continued its momentum into the fourth set, taking an 11-7 lead. UCSD stormed back to tie it at 12-12 and UCSD would take its first lead at 17-16 on back-to-back Carpenter kills. From that point, the Tritons ended the game on a 9-1 run, including two late Kaitlin Potter aces.
BYUH took command early against the Tritons as UCSD never found its rhythm. UCSD committed eight errors in the first set and hit .029 to lose the set 25-16. The Tritons would only commit seven combined errors in the next two sets.
After a 25-18 set two win for the Tritons, UCSD and BYUH slugged it out, tied at 17-17. Bailey and Potter recorded kills, followed by a Janessa Werhane ace to push the Tritons ahead 20-17. BYUH scored three straight to tie it at 20-20. A block, kill by Chen and back-to-back Carpenter kills pushed UCSD to set-point at 24-20. BYUH rallied to come within 24-23, but Bailey sent down the final kill to give the Tritons the 25-23 win, and the 2-1 lead in the game.
BYUH would rally late in game four as well. Down 24-22, BYUH came back to tie it at 24-24. Tied at 25-25, Carpenter recorded the go-ahead kill, her 15th of the game. Chen served up an ace to end it and give the Tritons the win.
BYUH was led by setter LeeAnn Mapu who recorded a triple-double with 13 kills (.812 hitting), 34 assists and 13 digs.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday with a single game against Seattle Pacific at 4:00 p.m.
