SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The 2nd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team saw its 16-match winning streak come to an end in a 25-19, 16-25, 25-15, 30-28 loss to San Francisco State at Main Gymnasium on Friday night. The Gators, making a strong push for an NCAA West Region tournament berth, held off four UCSD chances in the fourth set for set point, and finished off the upset with a block.
Sylvia Schmidt led the Tritons with 20 kills, while
Julia Freidenberg added eight kills on .467 hitting. The loss was UCSD's first to SFSU as the Tritons had won the previous 15 meetings, winning 42 of the 45 all-time sets. With the loss, UCSD drops to 25-2, 17-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Gators improve to 19-8, 12-7 CCAA.
Schmidt's 20 kills was one more than her second highest previous mark of 19 kills, set three times this season and twice last week.
Also for the Tritons, Katie Condon added seven kills and eight digs while Elaine Chen had 44 assists, 10 digs and five kills. Hillary Williamson added 12 digs and two kills while Roxanne Brunsting had 19 digs. The Tritons had eight aces, including two each by Chen, Janessa Werhane and Audrey Green.
SFSU got 21 kills from Beth Perkins and 20 kills from Lauren Walsh. SFSU outhit the Tritons .241 - .181.
In the first set, the Tritons got off to a slow start. Trailing 6-5, SFSU went on a 12-5 run to take a commanding 18-10 lead. The Tritons would only pull as close as 21-17 after two SFSU errors, but the Gators closed out the set at 25-19.
With the Tritons ahead 14-12 in the second set, a Chen kill followed by an ace sparked a run to push UCSD's lead to 17-12. The five point margin would be as close as the Gators would get as Schmidt put the set away on a kill at 25-16.
Much like the second set for the Tritons, the Gators put on a mid-set run to pull away in the third. Leading 10-9, SFSU scored 10 of the next 13 points to take a 20-12 lead and cruised to the set three win, coming within one set of an upset victory.
In the fourth set, the Tritons trailed until a Lauren Bradley and Green block put UCSD up 18-17. The Tritons would get their first two point lead at 21-19 after a Condon kill. SFSU battled back to tie the set at 23-23 and a Perkins kill gave the Gators their first set point at 24-23. A Schmidt kill tied the set and Chen followed with an ace to give the Tritons a chance at set point. UCSD would go on to have four opportunities at set point, only to have a service error or SFSU kill to extend the set. SFSU finally got a second chance at set point after a Perkins kill at 29-28. SFSU got a timely block assist to end the match at 30-28.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday night when it travels to Seaside to face Cal State Monterey Bay. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. on the CSUMB campus.
