LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The 20th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team lost a 10-6 decision to No. 13 Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview pool. The Tritons played even with the Wolverines in each quarter with the exception of the second period when Michigan outscored UCSD 5-1. Five different Tritons netted goals, led by Audra Bloom scoring twice. Michigan was paced by Alison Mantel with three scores. The loss drops the Tritons to 9-18 this season. UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to Chapman on Friday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m.
In the first period, the teams would remain in a 0-0 tie until Michigan broke through with a goal at the 1:51 mark. UCSD's Nadine Shnayderman scored with :40 left to tie the game at 1-1.
Tied at 2-2, Michigan scored four unanswered goals to take a comfortable 6-2 halftime lead.
UCSD had its best quarter in the third, as Rebecca Gearty scored at the 6:29 mark and Bloom scored with 4:03 left to pull UCSD within 6-4. After another Michigan goal, Hanalei Crowell scored with 2:38 left to close the third period scoring at 7-5 Michigan.
Michigan scored the first three goals of the final period to put the game out of reach. Sydney Gstettenbauer scored UCSD's lone fourth quarter goal.
It was the last home game for UCSD seniors Gstettenbauer, Gearty and Bridgette Bugay.
