ANNAPOLIS, MD. - The 13th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team defeated George Washington 15-4 and Johns Hopkins 9-7 on Friday in Annapolis, Maryland. Sean Cruz scored four goals in the win over GW as the Tritons went on a 13-0 run. David Morton started in goal for the Tritons, registering nine saves. Peter Gresham added three goals in the win. With the wins, UCSD evens its record at 3-3.
In the win against George Washington, UCSD fell behind 2-0 in the first quarter before Steven Donohoe's goal at the 3:12 mark began a streak of 13 unanswered goals for the Tritons. Bryce Madsen scored to tie the game at 2-2 after the first period.
In the second quarter, the Tritons scored seven times while holding GW scoreless. Cruz got things started with his first of three scores in the period. Gresham, Steven Donohoe, Kneif Lohse and Sean Roberts also scored as UCSD took a 9-2 lead at halftime.
The third period was more of the same as UCSD held GW scoreless again, as Gresham netted two scores and Jakub Bednarek and Cruz also scored.
In the fourth, GW scored twice while Ian Bausback and Michael Kerchner also scored for the Tritons.
Morton made nine saves in the game, seven coming in the first half.
In the win against Johns Hopkins, UCSD outscored the Blue Jays by one goal in the second and third quarters for the 9-7 win. Steven Donohoe and Lohse scored three goals apiece. John Butler, Roberts and Lance Curtiss also scored for UCSD. Morton had eight saves in goal.
UCSD faces No. 17 Navy on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
