UCSD Falls to Princeton In Double-Overtime, Then Pacific at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 18 UC San Diego women's water polo fell to Princeton, 13-12, in double-overtime and then dropped a 9-6 decision to No. 20 Pacific on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Invitational on the campus of San Diego State.

The Tritons are 8-10 overall record and will continue play tomorrow at the Aztec Aquaplex against No. 16 Cal State Northridge at 12:30 p.m. and No. 17 Indiana at 5:30 p.m.

UCSD trailed by one after the first period but outscored Princeton 4-2 in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead heading into the half. The Tigers would eventually tie the game after the third quarter and the teams raced to the end of regulation tied, 10-10.

Both teams would score a pair of goals in the opening overtime period, but the Tigers added another in the second extra frame to take the 13-12 victory.

Kirsten Bates scored four goals and drew three ejections in the game, helping the Tritons to a 2-for-7 game during 6-on-5 situations. Natalie Peng scored two goals and also drew three ejections while Hanalei Crowell checked-in with a two-goal, three-assist opening game. Bates, Crowell, Peng, Melissa Bartow, Felicia Orozco, Katherine Biehle and Leah Gonzales played in all six periods against Princeton.

UCSD took an early 2-1 lead in the second game of the afternoon, however, Pacific scored four times in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead into the half. The Tigers added a goal while holding the Tritons scoreless in the third frame to take a 6-3 lead. Both teams would find the net three times in the final stanza, leaving the Tritons' deficit at three, 9-6 in favor of UOP.

Crowell scored another two goals for the Tritons in the second match along with Jessica Tran who also added three field blocks. Bates posted another solid performance with a goal, two assists and three steals with an ejection drawn.

Prior to the Aztec Invitational, UCSD defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 14-11, on Friday evening at Canyonview Pool to improve to 5-1 in Western Water Polo Association competition.
