UCSD Wins Eighth Straight, 3-1 at Chico State

CHICO, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team continued rolling Saturday with its eighth-consecutive victory, a 3-1 topping of league opponent Chico State. Scores at Acker Gym were 25-13, 25-12, 21-25 and 25-20.

With two matches remaining in its regular season, UCSD is 17-9 overall and 13-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), good for third place. The Tritons clinched a berth in the league tournament with a 3-0 win at Stanislaus State Friday.

CSUC lost its fifth-straight match and dropped to 16-11 on the year and 8-9 in league play.

"The first two sets were maybe the best the team has played all year," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties."Chico is a good team and a win at their gym is never an easy task."

Danielle Dahle (La Mesa/Grossmont HS) and Meagan Wright (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) combined for 32 kills and 29 digs on the night. Dahle finished with 19 kills, 12 digs, three blocks and a service ace, while Wright had 13 kills, 17 digs and five blocks.

Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) matched a career-high with 29 digs and Kayla Evans (San Diego/Del Norte HS) added 12 to go along with a pair of aces. Alyssa McNeely hit .500 with nine kills and no errors in 18 attempts while blocking five attacks. Kameron Cooper also totaled nine kills and Heidi Sierks ended the night with 44 assists.

The Tritons were relentless at the net, out-blocking the Wildcats 12-1. For the second time this season, Rebecca Seaberry matched a career-best with seven blocks.

Chico State's Olivia Mediano had 18 kills and 11 digs. Shannon Cotton amassed 27 digs and Torey Thompson had 37 assists.

The Tritons hit .293 (59-11-164) while holding the Wildcats to a .121 (46-25-174) attack.

UC San Diego swept the regular season series as it defeated Chico State, 3-1, on Oct. 23 at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla.

UCSD concludes its regular season on the road next week. The Tritons travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Nov. 13 and Cal State L.A. on Nov. 14.

"It's been very encouraging to see us continuing to improve throughout the second half of the season," said Luyties. "We have another tough weekend coming up and the challenge is to keep working hard so that we can finish the regular season strong."

The eight-team CCAA Tournament will be held Nov. 19-21 at UC San Diego's RIMAC Arena. Quarterfinals on the 19th take place at noon, 2:30, 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. Semifinals on the 20th are set for 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. and the championship match on the 21st will be contested at 7:00 p.m. Daily tickets, available at the door and good for all matches that day, are $12 for adults and $5 for children, seniors and students.
