LA JOLLA, Calif. - After No. 20 UC San Diego women's water polo team held No. 7 Cal State Northridge within one score in the first quarter, the Matadors increased their lead in the final frame to take an 8-4 win. The Tritons drop to 11-14 on the season while the Matadors improve to 12-8.
UCSD was led on offense by senior attacker Jolene Guiliana with two goals while goalie Courtney Miller made 12 stops.
The Matadors got on the board first with an early goal from Taitum Herrington. But with six seconds left in the opening period and the Tritons playing a man up, freshman Kayla Fedler scored to give UCSD momentum heading into the second.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Lani Tittle found Lauren Finwall for the go ahead goal, putting the Tritons up 2-1. But CSUN scored the final to goals of the period to lead 3-2 at the half.
After the Matadors opened the third frame with a goal, the Tritons answered back on the next possession as Guiliana's goal pulled UCSD withing one. Guiliana scored her second of the night on a breakaway with 3:49 left in the quarter. Still, CSUN held a 6-4 advantage headed to the last period.
Marisa Young scored twice for CSUN in the fourth while the Matadors held the Tritons scoreless to win 8-4.
The Tritons will head to San Diego State to compete in the Aztec Invite this weekend. UCSD is set to play Bucknell and No. 10 Princeton on Saturday before facing No. 17 Wagner and No. 16 Indiana on Sunday.
