LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team opened its 2015 season with a 15-4 win against Pomona-Pitzer Saturday in the first of two Triton Invitational games at Canyonview Aquatics Center. The Tritons lost the second game against No. 5 Pacific by a score of 13-1.
Game One – UCSD 15, PP 4
Goalkeeper Jack Turner and the UCSD defense came out strong in the first game of the new season, only allowing four goals from Pomona-Pitzer.
The Tritons started fast, outscoring the Sagehens 4-1 in the first quarter with two goals from Chase Cockerill and one each from Collin Sullivan and Andy Moore. PP and UCSD exchanged goals in the second period as the Tritons went into halftime with a 5-2 lead.
The Tritons scored 10 more times in the second half and only allowed two Sagehen scores to win the game 15-4.
Pomona-Pitzer got four goals from three different players and Daniel Diemer had 10 saves.
Cockerill topped all scorers in the game with four goals and Jack Ellinthorpe and Nick Alexander added two each. Turner had 13 total saves.
Game Two – Pacific 13, UCSD 1
Fifth-ranked Pacific's second half onslaught was too much as UCSD fell by a score of 13-1.
The Tigers started off the game with scores from Casey Fleming and Ben Stevenson. With three seconds left in the first period, Moore found the back of the cage for UCSD's lone goal of the game.Pacific shut down the Tritons the rest of the way.
The Tigers had two goals in the second quarter to take a 4-1 lead at halftime. Pacific scored nine times in the second half to end the game at 13-1.
The Tigers got three goals each from Stevenson and Krisztian Laczkovics.
Turner amassed 11 saves.
The Tritons finish up the invitational Sunday, taking on Redlands at 8 a.m. and No. 3 Cal at 1:20 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door and UCSD students are free with valid ID.
