LA JOLLA, Calif. - Beth Mounier scored 21 points and the University of California San Diego women's basketball team overcame 22 turnovers en route to a 69-63 victory against Stanislaus State Friday night at RIMAC Arena.
With its fifth-consecutive win, UC San Diego moved to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), in first place alone. The Tritons remain undefeated at home, now 7-0. Stan State fell to 6-8 on the year and 4-1 in league action.
Mounier's 21 points were a team-high and one short of her career-best. The senior guard went 4-for-6 with a pair of three-pointers, but scored more than half of her points at the free throw line, making 11 of 14. Mounier also added three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Cassie MacLeod and Joleen Yang each netted 11 points for the Tritons. Dalayna Sampton led all players on the boards with 14 rebounds, while Mikayla Williams grabbed 10.
UCSD's sloppy ball handling led to 23 points for the Warriors. However, the Tritons held a 52-33 advantage in rebounding and went to the free throw line 40 times, sinking 28. Neither team shot well with UC San Diego finishing at 36 percent (18-50) and Stanislaus State hitting at just a 29 percent (18-62) clip.
Stan State's Cassidy Sanders-Curry put in a game-high 24 points and recorded a double-double by adding 10 rebounds. Reana Hardin finished with 14 points and Ana Burch had four steals.
UCSD led almost the entire game and had 11-point advantages in the second and third quarters. Stanislaus State got back within a single point (57-56) with six minutes left in the contest, but the Tritons out-scored the Warriors 12-7 the rest of the way.
It was the second-straight night that the Tritons handed an opponent their first conference loss as they defeated Cal State LA Thursday.
After playing its last five games at RIMAC Arena, UC San Diego hits the road for six of its next seven, starting at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, Jan. 5.
