LA JOLLA, Calif. – A strong second half powered the University of California San Diego women's basketball team to an 84-60 victory over California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State San Marcos at RIMAC Arena Thursday evening. It was UCSD's 10th-consecutive win.
UC San Diego improves to 14-3 overall and remains atop the CCAA with a 10-1 conference record. Cal State San Marcos drops to 8-8 on the season and 5-6 in the CCAA.
The Tritons opened the second half with a 12-point run to surge to a 54-32 lead and out-scored the Cougars 44-29 in the period to seal the decisive victory.
Beth Mounier paced the UCSD offense, tallying 18 points and shooting a perfect 5-for-5 in free throws. Joleen Yang and Cassie MacLeod added 16 and 15 points, respectively. MacLeod also grabbed nine rebounds and had two steals on the night.
The Cougars were led by Savannah Camp, who totaled 18 points and went 4-for-6 in three-point shots.
UC San Diego shot 43.3 percent (29-67) and held Cal State San Marcos to just 35.6 percent (21-59) from the floor.
The Tritons used a nine-point run in the first quarter to go up 13-6. Mounier made a three-pointer followed by a layup during the stretch. The Cougars made five threes in the second quarter to cut the Triton lead, however it wasn't enough as UCSD led, 40-31, going into the locker rooms.
UC San Diego broke open its lead in the third quarter behind 11 points from Yang. The sophomore guard went 2-for-2 in three-pointers as the Tritons took a 68-50 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, UCSD held the visitors to just 10 points and surged to a 33-point lead, 84-51, with 3:06 remaining on the clock. The Cougars attempted to come back, scoring nine unanswered points to round out the final three minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome the large deficit.
The Tritons will see a short break in action before they hit the road to face Stanislaus State (10-9, 8-2) for a CCAA matchup Friday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. The Warriors have won their last four games.
