No. 25 Tritons Continue Pursuit of CCAA Tournament Crown

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 25 University of California San Diego women's basketball team continues its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament run with a semifinal matchup against sixth-seeded Stanislaus State. The other semifinal matchup will take place between Cal State San Marcos and Cal State East Bay at 8 p.m.

CCAA TOURNAMENT IN LA JOLLA
UC San Diego is playing host to the CCAA men's and women's basketball tournament at RIMAC Arena. The semifinals will take place on March 6 with the champions crowned March 7. The men's tournament will be played in the afternoon and the women's sessions will be held at night. All CCAA tournament games played at UC San Diego will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES
This morning, the Tritons earned five All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) accolades, along with the Most Valuable Player award. Julia Macabuhay was named Most Valuable Player and was selected to the first team with Tyla Turner, while Sydney Sharp was picked to the second team. Brianna Claros and Sydney Brown were recognized with honorable mentions. Read more here.

Prices for the CCAA Tournament are as follows:

Students (All currently-enrolled CCAA students):  $3

The first 500 currently-enrolled UC San Diego students will receive free tickets courtesy of the UC San Diego Athletics Department.

Parking permits are required seven days a week on campus.  For UC San Diego Parking information, click here or download the Parkmobile smartphone or web application. The parking lot nearest RIMAC Arena is the Hopkins Parking Structure, located south of the arena at 9730 Hopkins Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093.

TRITON GREAT RETURNS TO LA JOLLA
Last month, Leora Juster was revealed as a member of the CCAA Hall of Fame Class of 2020. Juster will speak about her experiences on the Triton women's basketball team during the ESPN3 halftime show of the UC San Diego women's basketball semifinal on Friday.
 
EYES ON BACK-TO-BACK TOURNAMENT TITLES
The Tritons captured last year's CCAA Tournament title with a score of 72-60 over Cal Poly Pomona. This year, UC San Diego looks for its second-straight CCAA Tournament crown. The Tritons have not won back-to-back CCAA Tournament titles in their program history.
 
HIGH FIVE! TRITONS WIN FIFTH-STRAIGHT REGULAR SEASON TITLE
The Tritons earned a share of the CCAA regular season title with their 18-4 regular season conference record during the 2019-20 season. This is their fifth-straight regular season crown, as well as their 10th in program history.
 
TERRIFIC START TO THE TOURNAMENT
The Tritons rolled to a 78-61 victory over Humboldt State in the quarterfinals. Tyla Turner led the way with 26 points, and the mark was both a new season high for her and a game high. Sydney Sharp recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. View the full recap here.
 
RANKINGS
In the latest NCAA regional rankings, UC San Diego was ranked fourth behind Hawaii Pacific, Alaska Anchorage, and Cal State San Marcos.

MOST RECENT MATCHUPS
UC San Diego defeated Stanislaus State twice during the regular season. On Jan. 9, the Tritons won 76-56 at Stanislaus. Then on Feb. 1, the Tritons were victorious 82-54 at home.

MACABU-HIGH ON THE LEADERBOARD
CCAA MVP Julia Macabuhay ranks in the top five in five different statistical categories for the conference. Macabuhay ranks second in points per game (17.6), fourth in field goal percentage (49%), fifth in free-throw percentage (80%), fifth in assists per game (4.0), and second in assist/turnover ratio (2.3).
 
HEAD COACH HEIDI VANDERVEER
A former WNBA coach, Olympic team scout and assistant for the legendary Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee, Heidi VanDerveer enters her eighth season as the UC San Diego head coach in 2019-20. VanDerveer was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the fourth-consecutive season in 2018-19 as well as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) West Region Coach of the Year for the second-straight year.
 
WHAT'S NEXT

BIG WEST BOUND
UC San Diego is in its 20th and final year playing as an NCAA Division II team. In July of 2020, the entire athletics program will begin a four-year transition to NCAA Division I, culminating in full DI status as a member of the Big West Conference for the 2024-25 academic year. At that time, all sports will be eligible for conference and NCAA postseason play.
