Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tritons Unable to Top UC Davis in First Road Game

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego women's basketball team fell to Big West preseason favorite UC Davis, 80-62, on the road this afternoon. With the outcome, UC San Diego moves to an even 2-2 on the season and in conference play, while UC Davis improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Big West action.

The Tritons opened the afternoon's scoring with a jumper from Sydney Brown, but the Aggies came out hot, particularly behind the arc. UC Davis went 6-10 from beyond the 3-point arc en route to a 20-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, both teams compiled a 50% field goal percentage (Tritons 8-16; Aggies 7-14) as the Tritons put up 18 points while the Aggies put up 20. Tyla Turner led the charge for UC San Diego, scoring half the team's points in the quarter.

Following halftime, the Tritons were able to cut the deficit in the early minutes of the third quarter. Emily Cangelosi's 3-point basket brought the Aggies' lead to just six points with 5:45 left in the period. However, UC Davis responded with a 12-point run. By the end of the third quarter, the Aggies held a 61-43 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Tritons put up 19 points, their most in any quarter during the afternoon. Sydney Brown led the charge this time, scoring 10 points in the period. The late push brought her total in the contest to 14, a game best. Despite the Tritons' strong efforts in the final 10 minutes, UC Davis was able to come away with the 80-62 win.

QUOTABLE
"It was a tough loss for our team," said Head Coach Heidi VanDerveer. "UC Davis is top class in our league and they came out and established not just the tempo, but dictated offensively and defensively the way that they play. They've got excellent veteran players who are very experienced and used to competing in the Big West. I think our team learned a lot from the game and hopefully we'll come back and compete better tomorrow. Learning and growing is what hard days are about. It's a process and we understand that. Also, I want to congratulate our men's team on their win tonight."
