LA JOLLA, Calif.— UC San Diego earned its second consecutive victory to begin Big West play—defeating UC Davis, 59-56, on Saturday afternoon in RIMAC Arena.
The Tritons (5-6, 2-0 Big West) took down the defending conference champs behind 13 points, 13 rebounds from
Sydney Brown and 12 points, four rebounds from
Emily Cangelosi.
Aishah Brown also registered double-figure rebounds, finishing with 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got off to a hot start, jumping out to an early 12-1 lead in the opening quarter. The Aggies (6-6, 0-2 Big West) rallied with a six-point run but two timely baskets by
Ula Chamberlin helped the Tritons take a 19-9 lead into the first quarter break.
After battling back and forth in the second period, the Aggies cut the lead down to two with 2:50 remaining in the quarter. Another jumper by Chamberlin and threes from
Madison Baxter and Cangelosi gave the Tritons a 34-26 halftime lead.
The second half got off to a slow start, with the first basket falling at the 6:41 mark in the third period. The Aggies cut the lead down to two again before another Cangelosi three and a layup from
Julia Macabuhay gave the Tritons a cushion. UC San Diego took a 44-40 lead into the final quarter of play.
UC Davis pulled even at 44-all, just 40 seconds in to the fourth period. A layup from S. Brown immediately gave the Tritons the advantage again and UC San Diego never relinquished the lead again.
With 17 seconds to go and a one-possession game, Macabuhay stole an errant pass to run out the clock and seal the 59-46 victory for the Tritons—their first over UC Davis in the D-I era.
