MWP Team in Pool

Men's Water Polo

#13 UC San Diego at #12 LMU Saturday: Clash of the WWPA's Undefeated

LA JOLLA, Calif. — One team is coming out of the weekend no longer undefeated in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).

No. 13 UC San Diego (11-10 overall, 6-0 WWPA) travels to Los Angeles for a Saturday afternoon (3 p.m.) battle with Loyola Marymount (14-5 overall, 6-0 WWPA).

This will be the third meeting of the season between the conference foes, but the first (and only) that will count in the league standings. To make the match-up even better, the Tritons and Lions are 1-1 against each other in 2022.

On Sept. 21, LMU took a 10-9 win in sudden victory overtime in La Jolla. UC San Diego earned redemption just three days later, earning a convincing 14-8 win at the MPSF Invitational at Stanford.

UC Davis is also undefeated in the WWPA at 6-0.

There are just two conference games left in the season for UC San Diego - LMU this week and UC Davis at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Nov. 5.

Same for the other two unbeatens - UC Davis plays at LMU on Nov. 3 before coming to La Jolla.

All three squads are fighting for the top seed in the upcoming WWPA Tournament, which is slated for Nov. 18-20 at LMU. The winner gains an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship.

PLEASE WELCOME THE REIGNING WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK, VEDRAN LATKOVIC
Vedran Latkovic was named the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Player of the Week Thursday. In last week's lone game for UC San Diego, Latkovic netted three goals to lead the team to a 12-7 WWPA victory over Air Force at home. The win kept the Tritons undefeated in conference action as they moved to 6-0.  It was the 16th time this season that Latkovic has tallied multiple goals with at least a hat trick in 11 of those games. It is the second league player of the week accolade of his career as he also garnered the title on Sept. 29, 2021, en route to being selected to the All-WWPA Second Team. Latkovic is the second Triton to be tabbed the WWPA Player of the Week in 2022 as sophomore Rhys Bugelli earned the honor on Sept. 28.
LATKOVIC THE LEADER
Senior Vedran Latkovic currently leads the Tritons in points with 76 and goals with 58. The Montenegrin has scored in 19 of 21 games. He is currently riding a 14-game scoring streak with multiple goals in 11 of those. Latkovic ranks fourth in goals, third in goals per game, fourth in points per game, and seventh in points among all WWPA players. His six goals against UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 4 equaled his single-game career-high (also done 9/26/21 at San Jose State).
BUGELLI ROLL
Sophomore Rhys Bugelli has been on quite the roll. He is the lone Triton to have scored a goal in all 21 of the team's games this season. Bugelli has netted multiple goals 13 times. His 46 goals rank 10th in the WWPA.
NUGENT NUGGET
Brendan Nugent turned in an impressive performance in a win against Santa Clara at home on Oct. 14. He finished with four points, scoring three goals while adding an assist. His goal and point totals equaled his single-game career-highs. He launched four shots on the night, which also equaled his career-high.
AROUND THE BLOCK
Max Abravanel and Manuel Augusto are tied for second in the WWPA in field blocks with 11 apiece. In addition, Brendon Fezzey is tied for eighth with eight.
ON THE NET
Triton goalkeeper Alexander Nemeth has been in net for the majority of this season's minutes. He has totaled nine victories and 169 saves. That save total is the fourth-most by any WWPA player. He has been called upon to make 10 or more saves seven times, most recently turning aside 13 shots by Santa Clara.
BUGELLI NAMED THE WWPA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Rhys Bugelli was named the WWPA Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Sept. 28. He totaled 11 points with nine goals and a pair of assists over four matches at the MPSF Invitational, helping the Tritons go 2-2 against a stacked field at Stanford. Bugelli had multiple goals in three of four matches, including three vs. No. 9 San Jose State and three against No. 11 Pepperdine. He also scored twice vs. No. 10 Loyola Marymount and had a single goal against No. 4 Pacific. In addition, he collected five drawn exclusions during the tournament. Earlier in the week in a home contest against Loyola Marymount, Bugelli registered four drawn exclusions and netted a goal.
HELP ME OUT, WILL YA
With 25 assists, Max Abravanel and Kaden Likins are tied for the team lead in helpers. On Sept. 21 against Loyola Marymount, Likins dished out four assists to establish a new single-game career-high. With four assists vs. Air Force on Oct. 21, Abravanel equaled his career-high, which he has now done three times. Manuel Augusto is just behind the pair with 23 assists this season.

WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.
