LA JOLLA, Calif.–UC San Diego San Diego women's basketball fell to UC Davis, 72-49, on Monday afternoon in LionTree Arena. The Tritons (12-14, 9-7 Big West) moved to 5-16 in the all-time series with the Aggies (13-12, 9-6 Big West) and split the season series 1-1.
Izzy Forsyth led the Tritons with nine points, while
Sydney Brown added eight and
Emily Cangelosi and
Junae Mahan chipped in seven apiece. Brown and
Katie Springs led the team with eight rebounds each, while Cangelosi and
Julia Macabuhay collected three assists each. Brown also finished the day with a team-high two blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to open the contest, but then the Tritons went ice-cold missing their next eight shots from the field. UC Davis took control of the contest early, scoring 23 unanswered points and taking a 23-7 lead into the first quarter break.
The Tritons found a rhythm in the second quarter, using a 10-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to single digits, 25-19. The Aggies responded with an 8-3 run of their own and stalled the UC San Diego momentum, taking a 35-26 lead into halftime.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half, but the Aggies used a 16-point scoring run—including four consecutive three-pointers—to close out the period and took a 57-33 lead into the final break.
The Tritons continued to battle into the final period, getting good minutes from freshmen
Gabby Louther and
Junae Mahan. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome and the Aggies secured the 72-49 victory.
QUOTABLE
"Kind of disappointed from start to finish," said UC San Diego head coach
Heidi VanDerveer. "Give Davis a lot of credit, they came out with a tremendous amount of energy and jumped on us early. I thought that we responded but we never really had much control of the game."
"It starts with us and that's something we need to learn. They are a championship caliber team, have championship culture and that's something that we pride ourselves on and they gave us a good lesson. Playing hard, having that edge, all the things that we talk about, they showed us. Disappointed but hope that we can respond and have a better day this Thursday against Irvine."
