LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego women's basketball will wrap up its third season of Division I competition this week, traveling to face Cal Poly and hosting Cal State Fullerton in LionTree Arena. The games will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live statistics will be available via UCSDTritons.com.
 
The Tritons (12-16, 9-9 Big West) will travel to face the Mustangs (9-16, 6-11 Big West) on Thursday at 6 p.m. in their final road contest of the season. UC San Diego will wrap up the 2022-23 slate at home against the Titans (13-15, 8-11 Big West) on Saturday at 2 p.m. and celebrate seniors Madison Baxter, Sydney Brown, Emily Cangelosi and Julia Macabuhay.

It was a tough week for the Tritons who went 0-3 to close out a busy stretch of four games in eight days. UC San Diego fell to UC Davis on Monday, 72-49, and UC Irvine, 60-52, on Thursday in LionTree Arena. On Saturday, the Tritons dropped a 64-50 decision at UC Santa Barbara.

STACKING UP AGAINST THE BIG WEST
UC San Diego currently ranks second in three-point field goals made (7.3 per game), fourth in combined team rebounds (35.3 per game), second in defensive rebounds (26.5), fourth in team free-throw percentage (.763) and fifth in assists (12.79 per game).
 
Sydney Brown ranks eighth in The Big West in scoring with 12.9 points per game, second in rebounding with 7.2 boards per game, ninth in free throw percentage (.816), 14th in blocked shots (0.6) and 20th in minutes with 29.8 per game.
 
Emily Cangelosi ranks fifth in the conference in three-point field goals per game (1.6), Brown ranks 13th with 1.3 per game, Parker Montgomery and Izzy Forsyth rank 16th (1.2). Cangelosi also ranks 15th in rebounding (4.8). Bridget Mullings ranks 17th in blocked shots with 0.5 per game and Montgomery ranks 18th in steals (1.4 per game).

TRITON MILESTONES
Julia Macabuhay recently moved into four place in the all-time UC San Diego record books with 293 career assists (104 games). 
 
Macabuhay also recorded her 1,000th career point this season against Long Beach State (Dec. 29, 2022). She became the 12th Triton in program history to reach the milestone and her 1,110 career points rank her 10th in all-time scorers from UC San Diego.
 
Sydney Brown has tallied 702 career rebounds (99 games)—recording her 600th this season at UC Riverside on Jan. 11 and her 700th at UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 25—and has now moved into sixth all-time in the Triton record books. She is one rebound away from tying for fifth all-time with Farrah Shokoor (703, 2014-16).
 
Brown also reached the 1,000 career points milestone on Jan. 14 against CSU Bakersfield and currently has 1,178 total points at UC San Diego—ranking her eighth in the all-time record books for the Tritons. 
 
Brown is the 13th Triton in program history to reach 1,000 points and just the fourth to collect 1,000 points, 700 rebounds.

THREE TRITONS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS
Sydney Brown, Izzy Forsyth and Madison Baxter were all named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, and will now be eligible for CSC Academic All-America® honors. Brown is a graduate student earning her master's in public health with a 4.67 grade point average (GPA). Forsyth is a sophomore majoring in communication with a 3.62 GPA. Baxter holds a 4.00 GPA as a graduate student majoring in biology—it is her second Academic All-District selection.
 
FORSYTH EARNS FIRST BIG WEST WEEKLY HONOR (FEB. 20)
Izzy Forsyth was named Big West Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 26 points against Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 15. The sophomore finished 9-for-15 from the field, 3-for-5 from three-point range and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line to earn her first conference weekly honor. Forsyth led the Tritons in scoring again on Saturday at CSUN with 15 points, including 7-for-8 from the free throw line to average 20.5 points per game in two contests. She added four assist, four rebounds, three steals and one block for the week.
 
BROWN NAMED UCU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK FOR THIRD TIME THIS SEASON (JAN. 30)
Sydney Brown matched her career high with 31 points against CSUN, accounting for fifty percent of the Tritons' offense in a 62-55 win on Jan. 26. She scored in double-figures again in UC San Diego's 63-50 victory over UC Riverside on Jan. 28 to average 20.5 points per game for the week. The graduate student shot 46.4% from the field with four threes and went 11-for-13 (84.6%) at the free-throw line. Brown also averaged 7.0 rebounds per game, adding four steals, three assists and two blocks.
 
BROWN EARNS BACK-TO-BACK UCU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS (JAN. 16)
For the second week in a row, Sydney Brown was named the University Credit Union Athlete of the Week. Brown became the sixth Triton in program history to record 1,000 points and 600 rebounds over the week. She recorded her 600th rebound on Jan. 11 at UC Riverside and tallied her 1,000th point on Jan. 14 against CSU Bakersfield. The graduate student finished with her third double-double of the season, recording 20 points and 10 rebounds in the 62-50 victory over the Roadrunners. Brown averaged 11.0 points and 7.5 rebounds on the week with five assists, one block and one steal.
 
BROWN NAMED UCU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (JAN. 9)
Sydney Brown recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to a dramatic come-from-behind victory at Hawai'i, 60-57. The graduate student went 4-for-4 from three-point range and tallied 13 of her points and nine of her rebounds in the second-half comeback for the Tritons. Brown also matched her career high with three blocked shots against the defending Big West champions.
 
MACABUHAY NAMED UCU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (JAN. 2)
Guard Julia Macabuhay became the 12th Triton in program history to score 1,000 career points, averaging a team-best 11.5 points in the opening week of Big West play. The redshirt senior scored eight points against Long Beach State (Dec. 29), including her 1,000th on a made and-one free throw. In the Dec. 31, 68-58, victory over UC Santa Barbara, Macabuhay scored a season-best 15 points, including 12 in the final 2:31 and went 7-for-10 at the free throw line to ice the game. She also finished with five assists, three rebounds and two steals on the weekend for the Tritons.
 
FORSYTH NAMED UCU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (DEC. 26)
Sophomore Izzy Forsyth recorded a career-best 23 points in UC San Diego's 61-56 victory over Seattle U on Dec. 21. Forsyth hit 8-of-13 from the field and went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe in 34 minutes for the Tritons. She also collected a career-high eight rebounds, including three offensive boards, and tallied two blocks, two steals and an assist in UC San Diego's final non-conference contest of the season.
 
MONTGOMERY NAMED UCU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (DEC. 19)
Junior guard Parker Montgomery matched her career high with 19 points—including a season-best three three-pointers—against California on Dec. 16 in Berkeley. Montgomery averaged 13.0 points in two games over the weekend for the Tritons, shooting 41.7 percent from the field and adding three steals, three assists and two rebounds.
 
CANGELOSI NAMED BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK (NOV. 21)
Redshirt senior guard Emily Cangelosi recorded a career-high 25 points to lead UC San Diego to an 85-76 victory over Portland (Nov. 20) and earn Big West Player of the Week. It was the first Big West weekly honor for Cangelosi, who became just the second Triton to earn the recognition since UC San Diego joined the conference in 2020-21. 
 
Cangelosi shot 47 percent from the field and 58 percent from the perimeter with a career-best seven three-pointers. She also added three rebounds, two assists and one steal in the contest. For her performance, Cangelosi was also named UCU Athlete of the Week (Nov. 21).
 
PINTO NAMED UCU ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (NOV. 14)
Grad transfer Denali Pinto put up strong numbers in UC San Diego's season opener at California Baptist. Despite playing limited minutes in the second half, Pinto led the Tritons with 17 points, hitting 4-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range and finishing 6-for-6 at the free throw line. The Boulder, Colo. native also finished with five rebounds, three assists and one steal for the Tritons.
 
BROWN, MACABUHAY PICKED FOR PRESEASON TEAM
Sydney Brown and Julia Macabuhay were named to the All-Big West Preseason Team and UC San Diego was the only team with multiple scholar-athletes on the six-person preseason list.
 
Brown was named to the All-Big West Second Team a season ago, averaging 12.0 points and 7.9 rebounds—both team-highs—and finishing with a team-best seven double-doubles.
 
Macabuhay also received all-conference recognition for the 21-22 season, earning All-Big West Honorable Mention. The redshirt-senior guard finished second on the team with 8.1 points per game and finished second on the team with 56 total assists.
 
EXPERIENCED ROSTER
UC San Diego returns nine Tritons who saw playing time during the 2021-22 season, including four of the five starters. The senior class returns Madison Baxter, Sydney Brown, Emily Cangelosi and Julia Macabuhay for a fifth season. Parker Montgomery is the lone junior, while Izzy Forsyth, Bridget Mullings, Katie Springs and Courtni Thompson return for their sophomore season.
 
FRESH FACES
The Tritons add five talented newcomers to the 2022-23 roster, including four freshmen and one graduate transfer. The freshmen additions include Gracie Gallegos (Denver, Colo.), Gabby Louther (Pueblo West, Colo.), Junae Mahan (Stockton, Calif.) and Grace Talbot (Littleton, Colo.). Graduate transfer Denali Pinto joins UC San Diego after spending four seasons at Colorado School of Mines.
 
TRITONS PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL
As UC San Diego heads into its third year in the Big West, the Tritons were picked fourth with 72 points in the coaches' poll—their highest preseason nod. Hawai'i was picked to finish first with 99 points and nine first-place votes, followed by UC Santa Barbara with 84 points and the remaining two first-place votes. Long Beach State (73 points) rounded out the top three.
 
The remaining schools were ranked in the following order: UC Davis (71 points), UC Irvine (62), UC Riverside (40), CSUN (36), Cal State Fullerton (33), Cal Poly (18), CSU Bakersfield (17).
 
UC SAN DIEGO SIGNS THREE TO NLIS 
The Tritons announced three newcomers who will join UC San Diego for the 2023-24 season. The Tritons will add two international athletes, including Eri Blithikioti a 5'11" guard from Athens, Greece and Australian Erin Condron, a 6'4" power forward/center from Woodend, Victoria. Additionally, UC San Diego will welcome local product Sumayah Sugapong (San Diego, Calif.), a 5'7" guard who prepped at La Jolla Country Day School.
 
TRITONS SHINE IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE COMMUNITY
Madison Baxter, Sydney Brown and Emily Cangelosi were all named to the Big West All-Academic Team for the 2021-22 season. 
 
Additionally, Brown was a recipient of the 2021-22 Big West Service and Leadership Award. She was one of eight scholar-athletes to receive the honor for the 21-22 academic year and the first Triton to be recognized. The award criteria encompass service, leadership and academics. 

WELCOME TO LIONTREE ARENA
Since it was established nearly three decades ago, the University of California San Diego's RIMAC (Recreation, Intramural and Athletic Complex) Arena has been home to countless athletic competitions, graduations, concerts and other events that are imprinted on the memories of thousands of UC San Diego alumni, students, friends and visitors.
 
In June of 2022, UC San Diego announced that RIMAC Arena has been named LionTree Arena in recognition of a $5 million gift for scholar-athletes from LionTree, an independent investment and merchant bank with expertise in technology, media and the digital economy. LionTree was founded by UC San Diego alumnus Aryeh B. Bourkoff, who also serves as the firm's CEO. LionTree's gift is the largest ever received by UC San Diego Athletics, establishing the LionTree Endowed Scholarship Fund to support scholar-athletes.

ON THE MOVE
After 20 seasons playing as an NCAA Division II team, the entire athletics program has begun a four-year transition to NCAA Division I, culminating in full DI status as a member of the Big West Conference for the 2024-25 academic year. At that time, all sports will be eligible for conference and NCAA postseason play.
 
WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.
