Tritons Start Big West Play with 4-0 Win over Cal Poly

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The men's tennis program's first Big West match of the season resulted in a win over Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-0. The Tritons moved to 4-4 (1-0 Big West) with the win, while Cal Poly fell to 4-8 (0-1).

UC San Diego won a tightly-contested doubles point after victories from David Adamson and Robert Freedman on court three and Zach Pellouchoud and Pelayo Rodriguez on court one. Singles matches were won by Carson Lee, Pellouchoud and Freedman.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles
Adamson and Freedman struck first with a 6-4 victory. The duo nearly won 6-3 but gave up a game while serving up 5-3. The freshmen responded with a break of their own to claim the match.

Cal Poly won 7-5 at No. 2 doubles, sending the doubles point to the top court. The two teams were locked all the way to the end, with the winner decided by a first-to-seven tiebreaker. Pellouchoud and Rodriguez jumped all over the Mustang duo in that tiebreaker, winning 7-1.

Singles
All three of the Tritons' wins were wrapped up in straight sets. Lee finished first on court one with an efficient 6-3, 6-3 performance. Freedman followed shortly after at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

After Pellouchoud was a part of clinching the doubles point, he did the same again in singles on court four. His 6-4, 6-1 victory secured the dual match for UC San Diego.

The Tritons were also performing well in the remaining three singles matches that ultimately went unfinished. Diogo Tinoco won the first set at No. 2 and was up one game in the second. Rodriguez (No. 3) and Adamson (No. 5) lost their first sets, but Rodriguez was up two breaks in his second set and Adamson was deadlocked in his.
