SAN DIEGO — UC San Diego men's tennis had some strong individual performances on Friday in a match at nationally-ranked San Diego, but the No. 7 Toreros were ultimately victorious 4-0. The match was the first in the three-day Ed Collins Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
USD took the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories on courts one and three. The Triton duo of
Carson Lee and
Diogo Tinoco had a close match at No. 2 doubles, which ultimately went unfinished with San Diego leading 4-3.
The Toreros locked up the dual match with straight-set victories on courts six, three and two. Tinoco had the closest of the three matches at No. 2 singles, only losing the first set 5-7 after a late break. The second set was also decided by a one-break advantage.
The remaining singles matches went unfinished. Lee won the first set at No. 1 singles in a tiebreaker before losing the second 5-7. The dual match concluded before the third set between Lee and No. 52 Savriyan Danilov could begin.
Freshman
David Adamson won his second set at No. 5 singles and was up 2-0 early in set three at the point of interruption. On court four,
Pelayo Rodriguez lost the first set but was tied in the second.
TRITON TIDBITS
- USD is the first ranked opponent the Tritons have faced this season.
- Friday's match was the first meeting between the two teams since 2016 and the first since UC San Diego joined Division I in 2020.
- The Tritons lost the doubles point for just the third time this season (10 matches).
- The Tritons are now 4-6 on the year, while USD moved to 12-2.

The Tritons continue the Ed Collins Classic tomorrow (Saturday, March 8) with a match versus Texas Tech. The contest will begin at 2:30 p.m. at USD's Hogan Tennis Center.
