Matt Harvey enters his eighth season with the UC San Diego baseball program in 2026, after being named an assistant coach in August of 2018. Harvey was promoted to associate head coach in 2024 and also serves as the Tritons' pitching coach.
During his tenure in La Jolla, Harvey helped the Tritons earn the program’s first Big West Championship in 2023. He guided reliever Izaak Martinez to back-to-back All-American seasons and helped ten Triton pitchers garner All-Big West honors. At the Division II level, Brandon Weed was named an All-American, West Region Pitcher of the Year and CCAA Most Valuable Pitcher and two other Triton pitchers earned All-Region recognition.
In 2024, Izaak Martinez was a finalist for NCBWA Stopper of the Year and a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and National Pitcher of the Year. The graduate student ranked second nationally in ERA (1.85) and 13th in WHIP (0.95) and earned All-Big West First Team, ABCA West All-Region Second Team and All-America (NCBWA Second Team & Perfect Game Third Team) honors. Additionally, Anthony Eyanson was named All-Big West Second Team and earned an invite to USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp.

Three UC San Diego pitchers earned All-Big West honors, including Izaak Martinez (1st Team), Ryan Forcucci (2nd Team) and Michael Mitchell (2nd Team). Martinez was also a Collegiate Baseball All-American–the first Division I All-America honor for the UC San Diego baseball program.
In his first season as the Tritons' pitching coach, Harvey helped the pitching staff rank in the top 25 in the NCAA in ERA (3.59, 12th) WHIP (1.33, 14th) and walks allowed per nine innings (3.26, 22nd). Under Harvey's tutelage, Brandon Weed was named an All-American, the West Region Pitcher of the year and the CCAA Most Valuable Pitcher. Preston Mott was named to the All-West Region Second Team and Kyle Lucke was named All-West Region Honorable Mention by National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. All three pitchers in addition to Ted Stuka earned All-CCAA Accolades.
Prior to joining the Tritons, Harvey was at UC Santa Barbara for seven seasons, the first three as an assistant baseball strength and conditioning coach, and the last four as a volunteer assistant, and the Gauchos' pitching coach. In 2015, the Gaucho's pitching staff ranked top 15 in the NCAA in six different categories, including third in ERA. UCSB went 231-167-4 (.580) during Harvey's time, with three NCAA Regional appearances and the program's first College World Series berth in 2016.
At UCSB, 35 players were drafted during Harvey's tenure including the 4th overall pick in 2014. Players that Harvey has coached that have made it in the Major Leagues include Greg Mahle, Dillon Tate and Shane Bieber.
