Fred Hanover was named Interim Head Coach of the UC San Diego Men's Golf program in January of 2019 and had the interim tag removed in July of the same year.
Over the 2022-23 season, UC San Diego's third in its four-year transition to full NCAA Division I status, the Tritons played in 11 events, including their own UC San Diego Invitational, held for the first time at Torrey Pines.
The team started off strong, placing fifth in a 15-team field at the Ram Masters Invitational in Colorado. At the Orange County Collegiate Classic, Davis McDowell swung his way to his first collegiate victory and helped the Tritons place third overall among 10 teams.
On the North Course at Torrey Pines, UC San Diego placed 11th of 15 teams with McDowell coming in as the top Triton with his 11th-place finish among 82 competitors.
In April, UC San Diego took third of 12 teams at the UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate. Four Tritons placed in the top-10 including McDowell (2nd), Davis Lee (tie for 3rd), Jerry Wu (tie for 3rd), and Calvin Kong (tie for 7th).
McDowell was named All-Big West First Team after compiling a win, three top-five finishes, and five top-10 finishes.
The 2021-22 season saw UC San Diego compete in a full slate of 11 tournaments. Two of those were held locally - San Diego State's San Diego Classic (San Diego Country Club) and the Tritons' own UC San Diego Invitational (La Costa).
The Tritons rose to the occasion at their own event, placing second by a single stroke. In addition, redshirt freshman Davis McDowell took second, also by a single stroke. UC San Diego led the 14-team field after 36 holes.
The Tritons posted four more top-10 finishes, tying for fifth at the Bill Cullum Invitational, seventh at the Orange County Collegiate Classic, seventh at The Joust, and eighth at the UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate.
To wrap up the successful campaign, McDowell earned All-Big Conference West Honorable Mention recognition.
In its first season as an NCAA Division I team and a member of the Big West Conference in 2020-21, UC San Diego played in five tournaments with Hanover at the helm. Two of those events - the UC San Diego Invitational and the St. Mark Invitational - were hosted by the Tritons.
The team's first-ever Division I victory came in April when the Tritons won the St. Mark Invitational at St. Mark Golf Club. Senior Ryan Vaughan and junior Jared Gross tied for second at the event and seven Tritons accounted for 10 eagles.
Hanover was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Coach of the Year following a stellar 2019-20 campaign, UC San Diego's final campaign as an NCAA Division II member. He paced UC San Diego to a top-10 finish, including a win, in five of the six tournaments the team competed in before the season was abruptly cut short due to COVID-19. The Tritons climbed as high as No. 23 in the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) national poll.
After three events in the fall, UC San Diego started its spring campaign on the highest of notes, winning the 16-team Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge in Vista, Calif. It was the team's first tournament victory since 2016.
The Tritons also placed among the top-five at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate in Hawai'i, tying for second in the 16-team field.
Three regular season events were canceled, including what would have been the 70th SoCal Intercollegiate, hosted by UC San Diego. In addition, the CCAA Championships as well as the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships, were erased from the slate.
Senior Hayden Hui won several individual awards including PING/GCAA All-West Region and All-CCAA First Team accolades.
In 2018-19, Hanover led UC San Diego to its first NCAA Division II Championships appearance since 2004. The Tritons placed 14th in West Virginia, the team's best-ever finish at the DII nationals.
UC San Diego punched its ticket to the NCAA Championships with a second-place showing among 20 teams at the West/South Central Regional in Utah, also a program-best.
Hui, the Tritons' top finisher in 11 of 13 tournaments, was a PING/GCAA All-West Region selection and All-America honorable mention. as well as an All-CCAA First Team member.
Hanover has over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, has taught the game for over 30 years, and is an accomplished professional player.
Hanover served at the University of Redlands as Head Men's Golf Coach from 2015-2018. In his first season with the NCAA Division III Bulldogs, Hanover led the team to a second-place finish at the conference championships and one of his players was the individual medalist. In 2017, Redlands repeated its second-place performance at the conference championships. In 2018, the Bulldogs placed third in the league and produced an individual that went on to compete at the NCAA Championships.
From 1998-2010, Hanover was the first-ever Director of Golf for the men's and women's teams at Cal State San Marcos in San Diego's North County. He developed the institution's golf program from initiation to inception, spearheading recruiting efforts, developing budgets, and implementing two home tournaments. During his time with the Cougars, Hanover was honored as the NAIA Region II Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001, 2007, and 2008. The men and women achieved top 10 national rankings, won more than 10 tournaments, and produced 11 All-Americans.
Hanover was selected to direct the NAIA National Championships in 2007 and 2008 and was chosen by the NAIA to serve as the chair for the 12-school conference in which Cal State San Marcos competed.
He was also a golf lecturer at CSUSM from 2010-2012. In the newly-created position, Hanover developed a curriculum to teach golf to beginner, intermediate, and advanced level players.
Prior to working at Cal State San Marcos, Hanover was the Head Men's Golf Coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1996-1998. With the Coyotes, he developed the 1997 NCAA Division II individual national champion and was tabbed the 1998 NCAA West Region Coach of the Year.
As a professional player, Hanover has been competing on the PGA Tour Canada since 1987. He placed in the top 100 money winners for seven consecutive years and finished in the top 10 in three tournaments. Hanover also qualified for and played in the 2014 United States Senior Open Championship.
A 1985 graduate of UC Irvine with a bachelor's degree in political science, Hanover was named MVP of the Anteaters' golf team in 1984.
In 1987, Hanover founded a business to provide individual and group lessons to executives, children, and adults. He continues to run the organization today.
