LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team rebounded from Friday's loss with a double-header sweep against Western Oregon at Triton Baseball Field on Saturday afternoon. In the first game, the Tritons built a 5-1 lead and got out of a bases-loaded jam with no-outs in the ninth inning to capture the win. Matt Cantele delivered a homerun in the win. Michael Thomson earned the win, while Todd Gimenez earned the save. UCSD won the second game by a 4-3 score. Scott Clement hit a two-run homerun in the third inning, which proved to be the difference maker. Kirby St. John earned the win, while Eric Abraham notched the save. On the day, UCSD pitchers struckout 18 batters in 16 innings.
UCSD 5, WOU 3
The Wolves got on the board first with a solo homerun by Kevin Corrigan in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom half of the fourth, Scott Clement and Matt Cantele hit back-to-back singles to center. During Chris Franco's double-digit pitch at-bat, Clement would score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1.
In the Triton sixth, David Morehead led off with a single and advanced to second on Matt Lawson's sac bunt. Garrett Imeson the came through with a single through the right side for an RBI and advanced to second on the throw as UCSD went ahead 2-1.
UCSD committed two errors in the seventh, but escaped the inning without damage.
In the bottom of the seventh, John Roth doubled to deep center and advanced to third on Bryan Silverman's groundout. UCSD then perfected the squeeze play as Vance Albitz layed down a perfect bunt, scoring Roth to give the Tritons a 3-1 lead.
In the Triton eighth, Matt Cantele hit a line drive two-run homerun to rightfield, giving UCSD a 5-1 lead.
WOU loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth. With one gone, Paul Fisher doubled, driving in two and cutting the Triton lead down to 5-3. With runners on second and third with one out, the next WOU batter was hit, loading the bases again. Todd Gimenez then struck out the next two batters, ending the game at 5-3 UCSD. Gimenez earned the save while the winning pitcher went to starter Michael Thomson.
Game Two
With two outs in the second, John Roth singled and scored on Bryan Silverman's double to center. Albitz then doubled off the left field wall, driving in Silverman for the 2-0 lead in the second inning.
In the WOU third, Boo Christenson hit a three-run homerun to put the Wolves on top 3-2.
In the Triton third, Imeson hit a single and Scott Clement hit a two-run homerun to left, putting UCSD back ahead at 4-3.
The Tritons got out of a jam in the fifth, with WOU putting two on with one out. On a passed ball, the Tritons gunned down the trail runner and the batter ended up striking out looking to end the frame with UCSD still ahead.
The Wolves put the potential tying run on in the seventh, but Eric Abraham got the double-play ball to end the game, earning the save. Kirby St. John earned the win.
UCSD is back in action on Sunday for the series final against WOU. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
